Y1 visit Hainault Forest Country Park

On Tuesday Y1 classes took the 247 bus to Hainault Forest Country Park, as part of our Down Our Street theme, about the local environment.
The weather was cold and snowy but we wrapped up warmly and explored the hills, plains, forest and lake. Later we visited the farm to see the animals. our favourites were the pigs, sheep and donkeys.

Holocaust Memorial Day

Friday 27th was the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp.
6 children from Y6 represented the school at the Holocaust memorial service held in Valentines park. Many councillors and representatives from all major faiths were there to show their respect. A holocaust survivor recounted some of his memories and children from other Redbridge schools, including John Bramston, wrote poetry and contributed in some way.
The service was very moving at times however, the children from John Bramston represented us with dignity and understanding.

Year 4 Football Success!

Well done to our promising year 4 football team for a very disciplined and enthusiastic display against a strong mixture of year 4 and 5 boys of Buckhurst Hill GGKSC.

2 Goals from Year 4 Captain Darren helped seal the win with Alex and Maui also getting on the score sheet.

The boys from a mixture of both 4C and 4B should be very proud of themselves as they represented the school 2 years early and conducted themselves in a very professional manor, showing their skill throughout the game.

Well done to everyone involved and this was a positive sign of things to come when the YEAR 4 boys are representing the school in year 6. Also a big thank you to all the year groups that came out and watched and put on a great atmosphere for the team!! We made quite a noise when we scored!!

Handwriting Awards

Over the past term we have had a real push on handwriting and presentation. Recently we had our own John Bramston Handwriting Awards. There were 2 children chosen from each class, one for the 'Star Handwriting Award' and the other for 'Most Improved Handwriting'. A massive congratulations to our winners, I know the teachers really struggled to choose just 2 winners from each class. Well done to Jacob Elsdon for winning the overall Key Stage 1 Handwriting Award, also to Emma Richards for winning the overall Key Stage 2 Handwriting Award.

A group of year 6 children have been given the responsibility to plan and cost having the flooring replaced in the ICT suite. They are sourcing materials, considering value for money as well as preparing a presentation to put before the governing body before turning their plans into reality. Staff Panto!!

On Tuesday some of the staff performed the pantomime, Cinderella, to the whole school!!

There were three very ugly sisters, a very silly stepmother, a Handsome Prince, a stunning Cinderella, A wonderful Fairy Godmother and an evil old witch!! And lots of other characters from a traditional Fairy Story!!

There was singing, dancing and acting of the highest order!!

A great time was had by all the performers and audience!!

John Bramston Christmas Concert

On Tuesday 13th December John Bramston invited families to a Christmas Concert. The choir performed some of the songs that they will sing at the O2 Arena in March. Children who learn woodwind and strings performed, Jessica played the piano and three Y2 girls did some Asian dancing. Mr. Cusack and Mr. Murcutt played the piano and ukelele to accompany the singing.

It was a great evening and enjoyed by all!!

Hainault Library visit

On Tuesday 29th Novemeber Year 1 classes visited Hainault Library.
We looked at lots of different kinds of books and learnt how they were ordered i.e. alphabetically.
Mrs. Barratt read us some stories. It was a great local trip!!

It’s that time of year again! In the week beginning the 12th December each class will have their annual Christmas party. Please see the newsletter for the dates of each class’ party.
On the day of the party the children are allowed to bring a change of clothes with them. (They will change in to their party outfits after lunch.) We would also appreciate it if each child brought a small amount of food and drink to the party which can be shared with their class members. Children could bring a selection of fruit, sausage rolls, crisps, biscuits, etc. Please NO fizzy drinks, glass bottles or any food which contains nuts. If your child has a specific allergy to a food please provide them with their own party food selection.
If you have any questions or queries please ask your child’s class teacher.

John Bramston Gala Success!

BIG congratulations go to our John Bramston Swimming Team who represented the school at the Redbridge Mini Gala at Fullwell Cross Swimming Pool in Barkingside on Thursday 17th November!

The team consisted of 5 participants; 4 of which were girls, who competed in the Medley Relay race, finishing second in the first heat which saw them through to the final heat. The girls then impressed again and well-deservedly finished second overall out of 12 competing schools! This meant that JB finished second overall in the girls competition - taking back to school a very nice Silver Trophy!

The team also did very well in their own individual races – with Cayley (Y6O/L) finishing first out of 2 competitive heats in the 25m Breaststroke, and also Lauren also finishing first in both heats in 25m backstroke!

Well done also to Nicole(Y5G) who also progressed into the final and finished off in an impressive second place in the final heat in 25m Butterfly!

Well done also to Emma(Y5G) who swam very well and was unlucky not to get through to the final, finishing in 3rd place, narrowly missing out on second in the 25m front crawl.
A huge well done also to Ryan (60)who finished 5th in the front crawl - a very tough boy's 25m race.

The team now looks forward to the Gala coming up in January, which will be a very good test for the team!

If you think your child is a strong swimmer, and capable of swimming 50m comfortably and could be a contender to compete for the school, please see Mr Walker.

This week is Anti-Bullying week and the year 1's have been talking a lot about how to be a good friend.

Key Stage 1 celebrated Diwali on Thursday.

It is a Hindu festival celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs.

We listened to the story, did some dancing and played some circle games.

Some children talked about what Diwali means to them.

The children enjoyed acting out the story of The Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs.

We used our senses to explore the different things we could see, smell, hear and touch.

We collected lots of things that we usually see in Autumn: leaves, conkers, berries, feathers and twigs.

On Thursday Y1 children were excited about the History Workshop given by Epping Forest Museum service. Katherine brought lots of artefacts from a hundred years ago!!

When asked to guess what The Chamber Pot was the children had numerous ideas. Here are some of them:- something to drink from, a jug, a cooking pot, a flower pot!!

We painted some picture of the artefacts in the afternoon.

On Thursday 7th July John Bramston held a professional CD recording session for all the students.

The staff were also involved and recorded two tracks! We had already performed for the children on Wednesday!!

It was very exciting and all the children contributed.

26 tracks were recorded with a huge variety of musical styles included.

Arts week Story telling from Africa

Jambo!! This week has been Arts week. KS1 had a story teller from Kenya. She told the story about how leopard got his spots. We also had an opportunity to play an African drum and do some dancing.

Cycling at John Bramston

Cycling Day

This week our pupils were invited to bring in their bicycles for the day. It was amazing to see so many bikes! 101 in total! A session was organised for every year group to receive an active cycle time, led by Mr Walker, who is trained in cycle proficiency.

Cycling to school, like walking helps towards our health and fitness. Remember, you can ride to school on other days too. We would like to organise some other cycling events soon. If anybody has any ideas please let us know.

Last week we were all treated to a special BMX event. They had some fantastic skills.

We also had a visit from Doctor Bike.

On Wednesday 11th May Y1 classes visited Bethnal Green Toy Museum. We travelled on London Underground.
We saw lots of toys from the past and were able to play on some of them. The old rocking horse was praticularly popular!!

On Wednesday Mrs. Gupta visited Y1 classes to tell them about the Hindu festival of Holi.

She showed us a Power Point presentation about this Spring festival of colour.

The children asked questions about the different traditions associated with this event.

Some of our children who are Himdu described their own exoeriences of Holi.

We concluded the session dancing to some Indian music.

On Monday Y1 classes visited Fairlop Waters to meet Tony Cranston , a story teller.
We looked at all the new equipment that has been built there and we were encouraged to use our imagination to tell stories about it.
"It looks like a Giant's footprint," said Jacob.
"Maybe those coils are snakes!!"said Matthew.
It really stimulated our imagination.

Last Thursday the school celebrated it's love of reading by dressing up as their favourite character out of a book - the school was filled with Little Red Riding Hoods, Hungry Caterpillars, Goldilocks - to name just a few. International Christmas card competition

Just before christmas we took part in an International animated christmas card competition with 9 schools from different parts of Europe.
Each school submitted its 5 best entries. All schools were able to vote and finally the winners were decided.
Naomi in Y6 came overall second, being just pipped to the post by a student from a school in Germany.
We are very proud of Naomi and would like to congratulate all the children who took part in this very successful internation venture.

On Tuesday 11th January John Bramston Choir took part in the O2 Young Voices Concert.
Eight thouisand children from all over London took part.
It was an oppportunity to perform with professional musicians.

A big welcome back and 'happy new year' to all staff, parents and children.
We have been back almost a week now and the children are straight back to work and seem happy to be back. Lots of things have already taken place and will be taking place throughout the term. Please read your child's termly overview to find out what they will be doing over the next few weeks.
Remember also, that teachers are now contactable by email, if you wish to use this facility, pick up a form from the office, the class teacher will contact you by email when you hand it in.
Fronter will be used by your children to access their homework and link to sites that will support them with their learning. If you would like to know more about Fronter, watch out for parent information sessions later during the term.

Yesterday Year 6 hosted a mince pie and tea afternoon for their parents. It was a fun and festive time. The mince pies, made by Year 6 children, were delicious. We were also entertained by Scott on his trombone, Thomas on his trumpet , Leah on her flute and Fauza on her clarinet. They played Christmas carols and famous Christmas songs. It was wonderful, a real festive treat!

On Tuesday 14th December we had a Christmas Concert. Children performed christmas songs and wonderful instrumental recitals. All the children performed incredibly well and to a very high standard.

On Monday 13th December, some of the elderly people who visit Kielder Close Day Centre came to watch our Foundation Stage Nativity. We served them Mince Pies and Cups of Tea. They had a great time and were very entertained by all of the songs and performances.

On Friday 10th December our school community came together to enjoy our Christmas lunch. With so many children and such little room, we opened up the ICT suite too. Scott and Thomas played us some musical Christmas tunes and we celebrated (and got full) in style!

NATIVITY
Christmas is almost upon us! We are currently in the process of learning the Christmas story and practising the songs all ready for the performances to our families! They are as follows:
KS1 will be performing their nativity on Thursday 9th December at 2pm for Y1 families only and on Friday 10th December at 2pm for Y2 families only.

This year families will be able to buy a keepsake of the nativity - we are making DVD's of the performance priced only £5. (Details will follow later.)

Swimming Gala

Redbridge Schools' Swimming Associated Primary Schools' Gala - Thursday 18th November 2010

The following pupils were selected to take part in the swimming gala: Johnjo, Ravi, Lauren, Ryan, Cayley, Jessica, Rukshan, Nicole, Emma. And how well they did!

They were a credit to JB and their families; the enthusiasm,effort and determination they displayed, whether an experienced swimmer or somebody who has just learnt, was a joy to watch and be part of. They all achieved well in their races with Lauren getting into the Freestyle final, Nicole getting into the butterfly final and Cayley coming first in the breaststroke final! The girl's medley team (Jessica, Emma,Cayley and Lauren) also reached the medley relay final. So well done to you all and a special thank you to Mr Walker who helped with the organisation and supervision and Mrs Beadle for making this event happen! Thank you JB team - young and old(er) alike!

JB goes virtual!

This week we launched our virtual school to pupils and families. Staff at the school have been visiting the virtual school for the past year in order to share information and planning but this week our e-school has been offically opened to parents and children. Thursday 11th November and Friday 12th November saw groups of parents being trained on how to make the most of our cyber space.

Staff have shared their e-mail addresses with families to aid communication and learning can now be accessed from home through a secure log-in.
These are exciting times!

On Friday Y1W visited Redbridge Drama Centre to find out what it was like to be a poor child in the Victorian times. Kate acted the part of a very strict Victorian workhouse lady. We were the poor children working like slaves!!

Y1 Visit to Valentines Mansion

On Tuesday Y1W visited Valentines Mansion.
We found out about this beautiful Victorian Mansion.
The children explored the kitchens and the rest of the Mansion and were able to dress up as a Victorian servant, butler, housekeeper and man servant.
We learnt a lot about life in a Victorian household.

On Wednesday Y1W visited Kielder Close Day Centre for the elderly.
We sang some songs for them and then asked them questions about what it was like when they were children. "I learned that children in the past had no cars or TV," said Billy. "I found about the Blitz and what is was like during the war," said Jacob. Jeevan asked what it was like at school. Honey wanted to know what games they played at school.
We had a great time and invited them all to our Nativity concert at Christmas.

International Week

This week is International week and we have been learning about where the children and their families come from.
Diego's Mum comes from Mexico and she came into school to tell us a story in Spanish. She also taught us a Spanish song.

The Emerald Crown performance by John Bramston Choir

John Bramston choir performed The Emerald Crown this week for the school and for parents. It was a musical extravaganza about the Rainforests. Children form Y2 to Y6 sang and danced their hearts out!!

Redbridge Museum

Y1A visited the Redbridge museum on Thursday 24th June and Y1J visited the museum on Friday 25th June. The children were able to look at and play with old and new toys. The children discussed what the toys were made from and how they have changed over the years. The children had a lot of fun and so did the adults! Thank you to the adult helpers for supporting us on this trip.

Kielder Close visit

On Wednesday 23rd June a group of people from Kielder Close Day Centre came to watch a performance by KS1 and Foundation classes of The Garden.
The visitors had a lovely time and we served tea and biscuits after the performance.

Cake Decorating Competition!

Thank you to everyone who supported the cake competition by entering or buying cakes. We were amazed by the amount of cakes that we recieved. The cake sale was a great success and the cakes tasted wanderful.

Redbridge Drama Centre visits Y2 classes

On Monday 21st June Redbridge Drama Centre came into Y2 classes. The children were excited by the role play and drama they were encouraged to do by Johnny!!

The World Cup Final

Our Arts week culminated in a World Cup Final on Friday.
All the children cheered on the players and the winning teams were presented with medals.
Thanks to Mr. Cheek and Mr. Williams for helping to refree the games.

Arts Week

We have had a fantastic creative week with a huge variety of events!!
The staff also took part and recorded a song when the school made their CD.(available for £7.99 please pay cheques to John Bramston Primary and return asap)
We had children from Chingford High School running workshops for all the children. The workshops included drama, dance, poetry and guitar playing.
On Wednesday we had a Gypsy Traveller story teller who told stories to all the children. The week culminated in our World Cup Final!!

Visit from PC Laurie

On Thursday PC Laurie came to visit KS1 to talk about Stranger Danger.
She read a story and we saw a video but best of all the children tried on a selection of helmets!! Mrs. Whiteson even got handcuffed!!

A trip to the Barbican

On Monday 7th June the Year 2 classes visited the Barbican for a concert with the London Symphony Orchestra. We performed a song with the orchestra about the story of Little Red Riding Hood.There was lots of actions and intepretation of the song. It was a great experience for us all!!

Cake Decorating Competition

Just a reminder about the Cake Decorating Competition
To enter the competition you need to make and decorate a cake. It can be any type of cake and any shape or size. Bring in your cake on Thursday 17th June in the hall before 9.00.

The cakes will be judged by staff and the winners announced in assembly. There will be a winner from the Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS2.

These cakes will then be sold in the hall from 3.00-4.00 for 30p a slice. Please come along and support JB!

Y1 will also be making cakes on Friday 18th June 2010. These will be sold to the children at playtime for 20p.

Reading Targets

As part of our drive to encourge children to become thoughtful and enthusiastic readers, we are introducing Reading Targets. You will find the targets your child is currently working towards highlighted in their reading record.
When the class teacher feels your child has achieved there, they will note this in the target sheet and set new ones.
We hope you find these useful when supporting your child with their reading.
If you have any questions regarding these, please make an appointment to speak to your child's class teacher.

Year 2 visit London Zoo

In Monday 1oth May year two children visited London Zoo.
We have been learning about Rainforests so went to tha special Rainforest exhibition and saw the Three toed sloth, monkeys and colourful birds.
The children also enjoyed the Butterfly house and the Gorilla Kingdom.
We had a fantastic time and wished we could stay longer!!

Visitor in school

On Thursday 29th April 2010, Mr Amarjeet Singh, a member of the Sikh community, came into school and talked in assembly about his life and beliefs as a Sikh.
The children were very interested in what he had to say. He told the children that a Sikh believes they must share everything and kindly shared some lollipops with us all before he left!

On Tuesday 30th March we had a visit from Two members from the Buddhist faith.
They talked to us about Buddhism and what it means to them
The children asked some questions and we ended with a few minutes of meditation.

Active Lunchtimes

We have always had active lunchtime playleaders at John bramston. They are children who give up some of their lunchtime to provide play activities for the rest of the school.It was re-launched last week with new equipment and new enthusiasm. Mr Lathom, the school sports coordinator for Hainault and Miss O'Connor, PE leader at John Bramston, trained the children and organised the activities.
Feedback from the children so far has been really positive and they love the new equipment!

The All New John Bramston Website is just about ready to be released. We have been busy populating it and trying to make it as user friendly as possible.

Whilst the weather is still freezing, the school will be open as usual. Please send your children to school wearing the appropriate clothing.
Please use the main entrance only this morning - we will endeavour to clear Dryden during the school day.Text messages will be sent out as necessary.
Please take care on the pavements - the conditions are still treacherous.

JB opens its doors - Friday 8th January

Thank you to all the staff and the 180 pupils who managed to get into school today, despite the incredibly cold weather.
But the severe weather is set to continue and with hazardous conditions set for Sunday and Monday, we will have to take each day as it comes. If the weather deteriorates futher over the weekend, to find out if the school is open on Monday 11th January, please visit www.redbridge.gov.uk and look at the list of school closures or visit our blog which will give up to date information.

Severe weather conditions have persisted and therefore the Chair of Governors has decided to close the school on Thursday 7th January. A decision regarding the opening of the school on Friday 8th January will be made on Friday morning.

Anti-Bullying Week

John Bramston had an informative and creative week, where classes learnt about the importance of anti-bullying. Miss Jennings started the week by reminding us about the definition and meaning of bullying. This was followed by competitions run by the School Council, other themed assemblies and various classroom activities. We ended the week with BLUE FRIDAY - where lots of staff and children wore blue to make a stand against bullying.

Diwali

Diwali was celebrated on Saturday and we hope all our Hindu and Sikh families enjoyed the celebration. In our Diwali assembly last week Amogh, Vanathy and Malaviga shared some of the activities that they and their families enjoyed at Diwali. Inder gave us a magnificent performance on the Dohl drum. A special thankyou to Mrs Gupta for helping to present the assembly.

Cup Clap

Bubbel G

What an exciting morning at John Bramston! Bubbel G, a fantastic new girl band, came along to our assembly to show us what they could do. They were brilliant, the children thoroughly enjoyed it and sang along and danced to the songs. They even sang their new single which is coming out on October 17th! Good luck to the girls and thankyou for entertaining us.

A New Term and A New Year

Tomorrow morning all the staff and governing body are coming together for training. We will be looking at the year ahead and planning some very exciting things! Please keep an eye on our blogg to keep up to date.
The children are in for a surprise when they return on Monday. All their toilets have been refurbished and I think they are going to be over the moon! I shall post some pictures on Monday 7th September but not before - I don't want to spoil the surprise!
